Yes today, the 10th January 2015, is Zoey’s 2nd ‘Gotcha Day’ (aka the day we adopted her!).
For those that don’t know Zoey’s back story, here it is! We sell dog treats to businesses, and one of the places we sold to was a kennels in Yorkshire. A friend of the owner of the kennels (confused yet? 😛 ) said her next door neighbour had a very young puppy that he was neglecting. The puppy was being left out in a cold UK winter, with no shelter at all. She asked if the kennel owner could do anything and, as the owner knew we did a bit of rescue work, he asked us.
Originally we were going to take Zoey in, work on crate / house / obedience training, and then try get her adopted…but really, who could resist this face?! 😀
We went to see Zoey’s “owner”. He explained he’d bought Zoey to breed with his older male Staffy (*sigh*), but the male intensely disliked the new puppy, and so he had shoved it outside without a second thought. The puppy hadn’t had any vaccinations, and despite him owning it for two weeks, puppy didn’t even have a name 😦
So we picked Zoey up and took her home with us! It was bitterly cold, and she was shivering like mad, so we bought a blanket and wrapped her up cosy-warm. She was an angel on the train home, no fear or accidents, and everyone fawned over her. And so she became our dog 🙂
Here she is at 11 weeks learning how to sit:
And here she is at almost 18 weeks practising her recall:
She’s grown into a wonderful adult dog; sure she has her pain in the bum moments, and she isn’t without her kinks, but we absolutely adore her. She’s intelligent, eager to learn, willing to push past her fears, LOVES people (friends and strangers alike) and is an absolute dream to snuggle 🙂
Here’s what she got for her Gotcha Day (all these are treats, and aren’t given to her regularly)
The Felix treats are, of course, cat biscuits. But I’ve read that cat food / treats generally have more of a smell to them than dog treats, and so can work better as a high(er) value reward. They also tend to be smaller, so you can dish more out in a training session!
The star shaped treats we’ve had before, and although they’re too big, really, to be used in training, both dogs really liked crunching on them so we thought Zoey could have some again for her Gotcha 😀
Zoey loved the Pedigree denta-stick-thing!
And decided to eat it like this!!
After all those treats it was time for a walk to burn off some of Zoey’s energy. I did actually take my camera out on the walk with us, but couldn’t get any pics as immediately after we set off the ‘no battery’ began flashing, despite the fact that it still had half battery left! *sigh* It’s just what this camera does…
So here’s a ‘Zoey ready to head out’ pic instead 🙂
She only got a short 35 minute walk as it was very windy, and Zoey’s not a huge fan of the wind. She did get to go by the farm though, where she rarely goes, so she found that very exciting…there were a ton of sniffs that just had to be smelled, and we spent a lot of time standing still shivering! 😉
Upon returning home it was time to settle and chew her Tasty Bone…until she started biting massive chunks off it and swallowing them, then we had to swap it for some treats!
So, from me and my partner, HAPPY GOTCHA DAY ZOEY; we can’t believe we have had you for two years 😀
We love you so much and are so very, very proud of you!
